How do you topple a box-office juggernaut like Vin Diesel’s “The Fate of the Furious”? You open another guaranteed juggernaut, of course, and maybe it helps to have Vin Diesel in this one, too (“I am Groot”).
“Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2” (PG-13). Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) is back with his superhero team, and, naturally, another “Awesome Mixtape.” This time self-dubbed “Star Lord,” along with Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Dax (Dave Bautista), and Rocket and Groot (voiced, respectively, by Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel), look into Quill’s parentage, which leads to adventures with new friends and new foes. Sylvester Stallone and Kurt Russell are along for the ride.
“A Quiet Passion” (PG-13). Biographical film about American poet Emily Dickinson (1830-86), examining her life from her youth to her later years when she became a recluse, played as an adult by Cynthia Nixon. With Jennifer Ehle and Keith Carradine. (Exclusively at the Broadway Centre Cinemas.)
“The Dinner” (R). A pair of affluent brothers and their wives (Richard Gere and Laura Linney, Steve Coogan and Rebecca Hall) comes together to discuss how to handle an incident in which their teenage sons have committed a crime. Based on a novel by Dutch writer Herman Koch.
