SPIDEY v. TOY STORY 4 - Movie of the Week
SPIDEY v. TOY STORY 4
For Hicksflicks.com, Friday, July 5, 2019
The highly anticipated “Spider-Man” flick opened on Tuesday and the horror yarn “Midsommar” began its run on Wednesday, both in advance of the July 4th holiday on Thursday. And they are the only new movies willing to do head-to-head holiday box-office battle with, respectively, “Toy Story 4” and “Annabelle Comes Home.” But I haven’t given up on “Yesterday,” which could fare well in its second week, if only from slop-over audiences that can’t get into those other films.
“Spider-Man: Far From Home” (PG-13). Marvel cinematic domination continues just two months after the “Avengers: Endgame” juggernaut with this sequel to the reinvigorated Spidey franchise. Tom Holland returns to the title role, along with Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and others of the “Avengers” crew. In this one, Peter Parker travels to Europe for a getaway vacation but, of course, Fury once again calls upon him to save the world. Enthusiastic advance reviews are encouraging. With Cobie Smulders, Jon Favreau, Marisa Tomei and Jake Gyllenhaal.
“Midsommar” (R). After a family tragedy, a young, troubled American couple travels with friends to a remote Swedish village for a summer holiday during a festival that is held only once every 90 years, unaware that they will be coerced into participating in violent, sexual and disturbing pagan rituals. With Florence Pugh and Jack Reynor.
