“Black or White” (PG-13) stars Kevin Costner as a grieving widower who was raising his mixed-race granddaughter with his wife. He’s now the little girl’s sole provider but her African-American grandmother (Octavia Spencer) also wants custody, which leads to courtroom showdown. Co-stars include Gillian Jacobs, Jennifer Ehle and Anthony Mackie.

“A Most Violent Year” (R) takes place in New York City in 1981, statistically the most violent single year in the city’s history. Oscar Isaac is the owner of a trucking company under a federal investigation and dogged by criminals because he won’t play ball. Jessica Chastain plays his wife, reportedly in Lady Macbeth fashion. Albert Brooks and David Oyelowo co-star.

“Missed Connections” (not rated). Offbeat, low-budget romantic comedy about an IT geek (Jon Abrahams) at an upscale New York law firm with eyes for a career-minded lawyer (Mickey Sumner, daughter of rock-star Sting) who doesn’t know he’s alive.

“Project Almanac” (PG-13). Found-footage, teenage time-machine yarn has a high schooler discovering his late father built said machine and it’s in his basement. Soon he and his friends are going back in time several weeks to pass tests, win the lottery, etc.

“Black Sea” (R) is a submarine heist flick with Jude Law heading a collection of mercenaries going after a U-boat that was sunk during World War II and is purported to have a cargo of gold that was being shipped from Russia to Nazi Germany.

“The Loft” (R). Director Erik Van Looy directed this English-language remake of his Belgian film of the same title about five married men who secretly share a penthouse where they can cheat on their wives. When they discover the body of an unknown woman in the loft, they realize a killer is in their midst. Karl Urban and James Marsden star.
