IT’S A BIRD, IT’S A PLANE …

For Hicksflicks.com, Friday, March 8, 2019

The highly anticipated “Captain Marvel” is this week’s summer blockbuster. Yes, I know it’s only March 8, but this one will probably stick around and be the one to beat at the box office through at least June.

“Captain Marvel” (PG-13). Lest DC’s Wonder Woman believe she’s the only female superhero with her own franchise (we’re still waiting for Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow flick), here comes Marvel’s latest, Captain Marvel (played by Oscar-winner Brie Larson). She is aided in pre-S.H.I.E.L.D. 1995 by a youthful Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson with some CGI help) to insert herself into a galactic war between two alien races. With Ben Mendelsohn, Djimon Hounsou, Lee Pace, Annette Bening, Clark Gregg and Jude Law.

“Everybody Knows” (R, in Spanish with English subtitles). Real-life married Oscar-winners Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem star in this foreign-language melodrama. Cruz plays a native of Madrid living in Buenos Aires when she returns home for her sister’s wedding, with her teenage daughter and young son in tow. Bardem is a married family friend and her old boyfriend who becomes involved when a kidnapping upends the wedding party.

“The Kid” (R). A young boy (Jake Schur) forms an uneasy and unexpected alliance with Pat Garrett (Ethan Hawke) and Garrett’s prey, Billy the Kid (Dane DeHaan), as he tries to rescue his sister from his villainous uncle (Chris Pratt).  Character actor Vincent D’Onofrio (“Law & Order: Criminal Intent,” “Full Metal Jacket”) co-wrote, directed and has a supporting role in this revisionist western.

“Birds of Passage” (Not Rated, in Spanish with English subtitles). An indigenous family in Colombia is lured into the illegal drug trade in the late 1960s and rises to drug-lord status. (Exclusively at the Broadway Centre Cinemas.)
