‘AVENGERS’ WITH A VENGEANCE

Those Marvel superheroes — the Avengers — are back, and every other movie on the summer schedule decided to capitulate and just get out of the way.

As a result no other new films are opening, except a pair of art films at the Broadway Centre Cinemas that opened in New York and Los Angeles a few weeks ago.

“The Avengers: Age of Ultron” (PG-13). After taking down a Hydra stronghold and freeing a pair of twins that have strange powers, Tony Stark’s global defense system develops heightened artificial intelligence that reasons the only way to save Earth is to destroy all humans. So the Avengers must regroup and rethink a strategy to save mankind. All the stars are here, Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, etc. James Spader voices Ultron. Even Haley Atwell as Agent Carter is in the credits, though it’s anyone’s guess how she figures in the proceedings.

“Clouds of Sils Maria” (R). A middle-aged movie star (Juliette Binoche) owes her career to a play about two women, one young and one older. As a young actress, she starred in the play, and then the movie version launched her career in film. Now, she’s being asked to reprise the play, but this time playing the older part. Kristen Stewart co-stars as her assistant and Chloe Grace Moretz is the actress scheduled to take on the role Binoche’s character had played years before.

“Merchants of Doubt” (PG-13) is a documentary based on the book of the same title about climate change, comparing the deniers of global warming to those who claimed decades ago that cigarette smoking was not harmful.
