THE WIZARD OF OZ IMAX 3D
For Hicksflicks.com, Sept. 20, 2013
It's here, for one week only, the IMAXed version of the 1939 classic, "The Wizard of Oz." Of course, it's also in 3D … but you can't have everything.
Longtime readers know I'm not a fan of modern 3D, with the clumsy glasses, the slightly darker images and the overly inflated admission prices.
But, hey, any chance to see "The Wizard of Oz" on the big screen is worth it. Even the 3D. And the glasses. And maybe the cost.
Nothing much needs to be said about this one — a sprightly musical fantasy based on L. Frank Baum's "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz," with Judy Garland as Dorothy, a young girl transported by tornado to the colorful land of Oz, where she finds herself on a quest to obtain the broomstick of the wicked witch of the West (played gleefully by Margaret Hamilton) so the Wizard (Frank Morgan) will help her get back home. And along the way she teams up with the Scarecrow (Ray Bolger), the Tin Man (Jack Haley) and the Cowardly Lion (Bert Lahr), each with his own wish for the wizard to grant.
All the songs are most enjoyable, led, of course, by the Oscar-winning "Over the Rainbow."
OK, you've seen it before. So have I. So has everyone. But that's no reason to stay home.
Where else will you see a big green Wizard's head filling an IMAX screen?
And this is the perfect way to introduce it to a new up-and-coming generation.
