RIFFTRAX: SANTA CONQUERS MARTIANS

For Hicksflicks.com, Nov. 29, 2013

If you're a fan of the "Mystery Science Theater 3000" spoofs — the TV show where a human and a pair of robots in outer space making make fun of bad movies — you know what to expect from "Rifftrax: Santa Claus Conquers the Martians."

The Rifftrax guys will offer up a live snarky commentary as the film is shown, just as they did for "MST3K," and as other comedy troupes have also done.

Sometimes the movies these guys choose are hilariously awful all by themselves, with no spoofery, and that is pretty much the case here. The plot of "Santa Claus Conquers the Martians" has Santa and two children being abducted by aliens and whisked to Mars where they are charged with teaching Martian children how to have fun. But one dissenting Martian leader tries to sabotage their efforts.

This one is gloriously idiotic and anyone can throw a party with friends sitting around watching the film and making smart-aleck remarks about it, and that would be hilarious fun.

Which is not to say the Rifftrax guys won't offer some very funny commentary. I'm sure they will. And you can enjoy this live performance on Thursday, Dec. 5, 7 p.m., Cinemark Theatres.
