New Movies This Week New Movies This Week

"Aquaman" dominated the box office over the holidays, "Mary Poppins Returns" did well (though perhaps not quite up to Disney's expectations) and worldwide earnings for "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" and "Bumblebee" made them solid hits.

But the major studios are allowing those films to breathe for another week before bringing in more heavy-hitters, so just three new movies open this week — a low-budget horror flick, an independent art film and a quirky Japanese picture.

“If Beale Street Could Talk” (R). In 1970s Harlem a pregnant 19-year-old woman (KiKi Layne) attempts to prove the innocence of her fiancé (Stephan James), who has been arrested for a crime he did not commit. Based on the novel by James Baldwin. With Regina King.

“Escape Room” (PG-13). Six disparate teenage strangers are invited to an escape-room experience, not realizing that if they don’t solve the puzzles quickly in an effort to get out, they may die violently.

“Shoplifters” (R, in Japanese with English subtitles). A Japanese couple unable to live of the money they earn in their low-paying jobs turn to shoplifting, with their kids participating. It seems to go well until they welcome a troubled young girl into their home. (Exclusively at the Broadway Centre Cinemas.)
