“Joker” (R). Violent, controversial R-rated comic-book movie about the origins of the titular villain from the Batman universe. Failed stand-up comedian Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix) is mentally ill, impoverished, marginalized and bullied until he gradually morphs into a nihilistic criminal. With Robert De Niro.
“Farmer of the Year” (Not Rated). An 82-year-old widower (Barry Corbin) sells his Minnesota family farm and finds himself adrift until he makes the decision to attend his 65th World War II reunion in California. He makes it a road trip, accompanied by his teenage granddaughter, encountering a bevy of eccentrics along the way in this gentle comedy-drama. (Exclusively at the Megaplex Jordan Commons Theaters.)
“Monos” (Not Rated, in Spanish with English subtitles). In a remote Latin America mountaintop a group of commandos (or “monos”) are performing military training exercises as they watch over a prisoner of war, a doctor (Julianne Nicholson) and a conscripted cow. (Exclusively at the Broadway Centre Cinemas.)
