A mixed bag of new movies opens this week, the most appealing being a salute to an old-time movie duo.

“Stan & Ollie” (PG). Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly do startling impersonations of the legendary movie-star comedy team of Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy in this biographical tribute to “The Boys” as it follows them on what would be their final series of public appearances during a stage tour of England. Rave reviews accompany this comedy-drama, describing it as gentle, funny and warm.

“The Kid Who Would Be King” (PG). As with “Robin Hood” late last year, the King Arthur legend gets a 21st century reboot with all the accompanying razzle and dazzle. But will it maintain the magic? This one’s a modern-day update as a young boy finds King Arthur’s sword in the stone and is tasked with stopping an enchantress who is bent on destroying the world. Patrick Stewart plays Merlin.

“Serenity” (R). The quiet life of a fishing-boat captain and tour guide (Matthew McConaughey) is upended when his ex-wife (Anne Hathaway) shows up asking for help because her new husband (Jason Clarke) is a violent psychopath. Her solution: Take the guy into the ocean and throw him to the sharks. With Diane Lane and Djimon Hounsou.
