Action pictures starring, respectively, Jennifer Lawrence and Bruce Willis, go head to head this weekend, along with a couple of “art” films.
“Red Sparrow” (R). A Russian spy (Jennifer Lawrence) is temped to become a double agent for the United States after falling in love with the CIA operative (Joel Edgerton) who attempts to recruit her. With Jeremy Irons, Charlotte Rampling, Mary-Louise Parker and Joely Richardson.
“Death Wish” (R). Bruce Willis stars in this remake of the 1974 Charles Bronson movie, although this one appears to be a straight revenge/action film as opposed to Bronson’s more thoughtful vigilante picture. With Vincent D’Onofrio, Dean Norris, Kimberly Elise, Mike Epps and Elisabeth Shue.
“Nostalgia” (R). Multiple storylines intersect in this story of love and loss, and the solace that comes from memories and shared objects. With Jon Hamm, Nick Offerman, Amber Tamblyn, Patton Oswalt, Catherine Keener, Ellen Burstyn and Bruce Dern.
“God’s Own Country” (Not rated). Fictionalized but loosely based on writer-director Francis Lee’s own life, this British drama follows an aimless young gay man who lives and works the family farm but spends his free time in binge drinking and casual sex — until he is attracted to a Romanian migrant worker. (Exclusively at the Tower Theater.)
