Five new movies open this week, including a humorous true story, a CGI-driven fantasy and a gritty crime drama. Something for everyone … sort of.
“Eddie the Eagle” (PG-13). This comedy-drama is a true story about a geeky English ski-jumper with more determination than talent who hopes to represent Britain in the 1988 Olympics. Eventually he is able to convince a washed-up coach (Hugh Jackman) to help him achieve his dream. Christopher Walken co-stars.
“Gods of Egypt” (PG-13). CGI-laden fantasy about the Egyptian god of darkness taking over the throne of the empire, then eventually being challenged by a mortal who allies himself with another Egyptian god. Stars include Chadwick Boseman, Rufus Sewell, Gerard Butler and Bryan Brown.
“Triple 9” (R). A group of criminals and corrupt cops are coerced by Russian mobsters into joining forces for a dangerous heist in this gritty thriller. Casey Affleck, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Anthony Mackie, Woody Harrelson and Kate Winslet star.
“Touched With Fire” (R). Katie Holmes and Luke Kirby are bipolar poets who meet and fall in love in a psychiatric hospital. Christine Lahti, Griffin Dunne and Bruce Altman co-star. (Exclusively at the Broadway Centre Cinemas.)
“Theeb” (Not Rated, in Arabic with English subtitles). This Jordanian film is about a young boy’s fight for survival in the Wadi Rum desert during World War I after a bandit raid. (Exclusively at the Broadway Centre Cinema.)
