SPIELBERG SPIES, MONSTERS FOR KIDS - Movie of the Week
SPIELBERG SPIES, MONSTERS FOR KIDS
For Hicksflicks.com, Friday, Oct. 16, 2015
It’s an unusual week at the movies, ratings-wise: only one R-rated flick, along with two PGs and three PG-13s. When’s the last time that happened?
“Bridge of Spies” (PG-13). Steven Spielberg’s latest is this true thriller about the 1960 U-2 spy plane piloted by Francis Gary Powers (Austin Stowell) that was shot down over the Soviet Union, leading to a negotiation facilitated by Brooklyn lawyer James B. Donovan (Tom Hanks). Co-stars include Amy Ryan, Mark Rylance and Alan Alda.
“Goosebumps” (PG). Jack Black stars in this comedy-creature feature as a fictionalized version of R.L. Stine, author of the “Goosebumps” books. Some kids in his home unlock his books, unleashing the actual monsters on the town. The trailer looks like a sequel to “Jumanji.” Amy Ryan is in this one, too.
“Woodlawn” (PG). This faith film tells the true story of an Alabama high school that was ordered to be integrated in 1973, leading to riots in the city and tension among the students, in particular the football team. That is, until the coach (Nic Bishop) allowed someone (Sean Astin) to offer some hope in the form of a Christian message.
“Coming Home” (PG-13, in Mandarin with English subtitles). Gong Li teams up with director Zhang Yimou, for whom she starred in several 1990 international hits, including “Raise the Red Lantern” and “The Story of Qiu Ju.” Here, she plays a devoted wife whose husband was sent to a labor camp during the Cultural Revolution. And when he finally returns, she no longer remembers him. (Exclusively at the Broadway Centre Cinemas.)
“Freeheld” (PG-13). True story of a New Jersey police officer (Julianne Moore) who discovers she is dying of cancer and fights to ensure that her pension will go to her domestic partner (Ellen Page). Co-stars include Steve Carell and Michael Shannon.
“Crimson Peak” (R). From the trailer, there’s a bit of both “Rebecca” and “The Haunting” in this horror film from Guillermo del Toro (“Pan’s Labyrinth,” “Pacific Rim”). Stars include Mia Wasikowska, Jessica Chastain and Tom Hiddleston.
