Only three movies are opening this week, all R-rated and two of them obvious Oscar bait, that is, films hoping to earn Oscar nominations, especially for their lead actors. The third film is yet another ultra-raunchy comedy, this one set against Christmas. Ho, ho, ho.

“Miss Sloane” (R). Jessica Chastain is the title character, one of D.C.’s most powerful lobbyists, and one who is willing to use any means necessary to win. But when she goes up against the gun lobby, she may have met her most formidable foe. With Mark Strong, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Alison Pill, John Lithgow and Sam Waterston.

“Manchester By the Sea” (R). Casey Affleck stars as an aimless handyman in a small New England community whose brother (Kyle Chandler) suddenly dies, leaving a will that names him as guardian of his 16-year-o(ld nephew. Written and directed by independent filmmaker Kenneth Lonergan. Co-stars include Michelle Williams, Gretchen Mol and Matthew Broderick.

“Office Christmas Party” (R). Tough CEO (Jennifer Aniston) announces she is going to close a branch of her company, a branch run by her hard-partying brother (T.J. Miller), unless he can win over a client (Courtney B. Vance), whose account could save the office. Raunchy farce co-stars Jason Bateman, Kate McKinnon and Olivia Munn.
