Along with the "10 Movie War Collection," which I wrote about a couple of weeks ago, Universal has also released an equally cheap "10 Movie Collection: Classic Westerns" DVD — and this one also has some heretofore limited-release titles.

All of the films here are well worth watching and fans of traditional Westerns should be more than pleased to find John Wayne, Randolph Scott, Joel McCrea and Audie Murphy among the stars of these three black-and-white and seven color films.

The titles here that are new to DVD (previously relegated to manufacture-on-demand DVD-R discs) are "Texas Rangers Ride Again" (1940), notable for supporting roles filled by Anthony Quinn, Broderick Crawford and Robert Ryan; "Comanche Territory" (1950), starring Maureen O'Hara and Macdonald Carey; and "Tomahawk" (1951), with Van Heflin and Yvonne DeCarlo in the leads and Rock Hudson in support.

Titles that have been available alone or in other sets are Joel McCrea's version of "The Virginian" (1946); two of Audie Murphy's earliest Westerns from 1950, "Sierra," with Burl Ives and Dean Jagger, and "Kansas Raiders," with Tony Curtis in support; "When the Daltons Rode" (1940), starring Randolph Scott and Kay Francis; "The Spoilers," with Scott co-starring with John Wayne and Marlene Dietrich; Scott's "Albuquerque" (1948), with Gabby Hayes and Lon Chaney Jr.; and Alan Ladd in "Whispering Smith" (1948), co-starring Robert Preston.

The three-disc set retails at $14.98 but can be found at Walmart, Costco and Amazon.com for under $10, as well as at many other outlets. The transfers look great, and at this price it's a steal.
