AN OFF-WEEK FOR SUMMER MOVIE MANIA
For Hicksflicks.com, Friday, June 29, 2018
There are just three minor movies opening this weekend before the Fourth of July, and none of them are expected to have any impact on the box-office reign of the two current juggernauts, “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” and “The Incredibles 2.” In fact, they may not even dislodge runners-up “Ocean’s Eight,” “Tag” and “Deadpool 2.” Consider this new trio of titles as a place-setter until “Ant-Man and the Wasp” opens on July 6.
“Uncle Drew” (PG-13). This sports farce stars comic Lil Rel Howery as a team manager desperate to win a street-basketball tournament, so he recruits a cadre of elderly former streetball legends as ringers, played by former NBA stars Kyrie Irving (as the title character), Shaquille O’Neal, Chris Webber, Reggie Miller and Nate Robinson.
“Sicario: Day of the Soldado” (R). Mexican drug cartels are smuggling terrorists across the border into the United States, so the CIA sends an agent (Josh Brolin) and a former undercover operative (Benicio del Toro) to eliminate the problem. With Catherine Keener, Jeffrey Donovan and Matthew Modine.
“Sanju” (Not Rated, in Hindi with English subtitles). Biographical film from India about actor Sanjay Dutt, who has appeared in more than 187 films in a variety of genres, although he is best known for playing gangsters, thugs and policemen in action movies. Included in this dramatization are the years Dutt was in and out of prison on charges of involvement in terrorist activities.
