The first major movie western in a while is engendering rave reviews and Oscar talk, and it opens this weekend with another strong Oscar contender, “Phantom Thread.” Plus a country-western family film, an Afghan war flick and a caper thriller.

“Hostiles” (R). Writer-director Scott Cooper (“Crazy Heart,” “Out of the Furnace”) is behind this western about a U.S. Cavalry officer (Christian Bale) with a hatred for Indians is assigned to escort a Cheyenne war chief (Wes Studi) and his family back to their Montana home. With Rosamund Pike, Ben Foster and Adam Beach.

“Forever My Girl” (PG). A country star who has made a name for himself after having left his home 10 years earlier, returns to discover he has a daughter with his former girlfriend. With Alex Roe and Jessica Rothe. 


“12 Strong” (R). The true story of the first Special Forces team deployed to Afghanistan following 9/11, which is forced to strike an uneasy alliance with a warlord to get close to the Taliban. Chris Hemsworth cuts his hair to star, with Michael Shannon, Michael Peña.

“Phantom Thread” (R). Daniel Day-Lewis, in what he says is his last role as he retires, stars in this melodrama as an eccentric, fastidious dressmaker in 1950s London whose structured, orderly life is upended when he meets and gradually falls in love with a woman (Vicky Krieps) who becomes his muse. Written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson (“There Will Be Blood,” “The Master”).

“Den of Thieves” (R). An elite L.A. County Sheriff’s Dept. unit tries to track a clever bank-robbery crew by thinking the way they do. With Gerard Butler, Jordan Bridges and 50 Cent.
