‘LITTLE WOMEN’: YOU CAN’T HAVE TOO MANY
For Hicksflicks.com, Friday, Dec. 27, 2019
The umpteenth retelling of the stories of Jo, Meg, Amy and Beth opened in theaters on Wednesday (Christmas Day, of course), as did all of these new end-of-the-year offerings.
“Little Women” (PG). Not counting all the TV adaptations, this is the eighth big-screen version of Louisa May Alcott’s novel about four sisters who grow up in poverty while leaning on each other for support, but who eventually grow up and head off in different directions. With Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, Eliza Scanlen, Laura Dern, Timothée Chalamet, Tracy Letts, Bob Odenkirk, Chris Cooper and Mery Streep.
“Spies in Disguise” (PG). A superspy (voiced by Will Smith) is accidentally turned into a pigeon by his gadget-inventing associate (Tom Holland) in this animated feature. With voices provided by Rashida Jones, Reba McEntire, Rachel Brosnahan and Karen Gillan.
“Uncut Gems” (R). Adam Sandler makes one of his rare forays into drama with this well-reviewed tale of a hyper Jewish jeweler in New York City’s diamond district with a serious gambling addiction. With Idina Menzel, Eric Bogosian, Judd Hirsch and NBA star Kevin Garnett.
